Segou returns to Richmond

The delegation from Segou arrived Tuesday and after being well situated with their hosts are looking forward to an itinerary of official and social engagements. The members of the delegation are as follows:

  3. DIAO Mme. Kadiatou Tall, City councilwoman, Member of Commission for Partnerships, Artisans and Culture

  5. SIMAGA Nouhoun, Hotelier, Business Executive, Bamako 
  6. DIARRA Denis Calvin, Director of Traditional Arts for the Festival sur le Niger 
  7. DAFFE Mlle. Aissata, Board of Directors, Festival sur le Niger
  8. TOURE Kalifa, Member of Virginia Friends of Mali, Bamako
Their itinerary includes
Oct 6 Reception during Richmond Sister City Commission's monthly meeting
Oct 7 Meetings with city departments of health, sanitation, public utilities and transportation
Oct 8 Presentations with students of Maggie Walker High School for International Studies
Oct 8-10 Richmond Folk Festival
Oct 11 School visits: Southside Child Development Center and others

Storytelling & Mudcloth Making!

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts hosted its free Family Day 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, celebrating the art and culture of Mali. Storytelling and Mudcloth activities with Virginia Friends of Mali , dancing, performances by musician Cheick Hamala Diabate and DJ Mikemetic & the Afro Beta Drummers were featured, along with quilting demonstrations by the Sisters of the Yam African-American Quilters Guild , clay vessel demonstrations by Carren Clarke and woodcut print demonstrations by Dennis Winston . Storytelling in the Library with the Alapini-Sakponou Women had it covered with these two books: The Magic Gourd by Baba Wague Diakite Sundiata: The Lion King of Mali by David Wisniewski At the end of the storytelling, the group talked about the country of Mali, and used a map made of Bogolanfini, a textile decorated with natural leaf and mud dyes.
